The Gay Superbowl, 2014 edition is now history. Host Ellen Degeneres delivered a hilarious opening monologue. To Jonah Hill: “You showed us something in that film that I have not seen for a very, very long time.” She then spent the rest of the show in the audience, talking to the A-listers, mostly, ordering pizza (Domino’s must have had a take-out spike) and the best selfie EVER – a bet with Meryl that it would become the most reTweeted image EVER, and it did. Not a lot of award surprises, Jared Leto started off the night with a great acceptance speech and his Dallas Buyers Club co-star, Matthew McConaughey finished it off with a weird one (I thought it was both inspiring AND dickish, which is an interesting mix.) Both Lupita N’Yongo and Cate Blanchett (my two best dressed, as well as Actress faves) won and gave gracious speeches. Jennifer Lawrence fell again (outside this time) and Oprah was nowhere in sight (at the Vanity Fair party, no doubt) Gravity and 12 Years a Slave were big winners and Best Director winner, Alfonso Curaron and Slave’s director Steve McQueen also gave egoless acceptances. The Most Beautiful Couple of the Night was a tie between presenters Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron and real-life couple Brad & Angelina. Angelina was also half of the Classiest Couple of the Night, along with her co-presenter Sydney Poitier. Ghetto News got in the Best Tweet of the night with a shot of Brad and Angie looking lovingly at Lupita with the caption, “They want to adopt her so bad.” Whoopie Goldberg’s “pirate shirt under a gown with ruby slippers” look was head-scratching, as she intro’d Pink, who did a nice rendition of “Over the Rainbow”, but I couldn’t help but wonder what Adele might have done with that standard. Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings” (which got a standing ovation) was panned by the younger set and beloved by the older, who who were exhibiting some of the scariest faces of the night. Kim Novak, at 81, featuring, what is clearly “not her best work”, Goldie Hawn looking like Ellen’s intended mispronunciation, “Holdie Gawn” and John Travolta (featuring “not his best fake hair” work) mispronouncing his intro of Edina Menzel as “Adele Dazim” and her shrill, heavy metal for 6 year olds, best song winner from Frozen, “Let It Go.” (I had to let it “mute”, myself) But all-in-all, Ellen kept it moving and got in the best joke of the night, at the end of her monologue; “We should get started. It’s going to be an exciting night. Anything can happen, so many different possibilities. Possibility number one: 12 Years a Slave wins best picture. Possibility number two: You’re all racists. And now please welcome our first white presenter, Anne Hathaway.” Jokes asides, this Oscar ceremony was historic as this WAS the first time a film by a black director has won Best Picture in the Academy’s 86-year history.
