Somebody sent me this Craigslist offering: “For sale: a set of TEN (10) Original Acrylic on Canvas CLUB KIDS Paintings, done by Famed Pop Artist Clayton LeFevre in the late 1980s. Each painting is 36″ x 60″.” And, look! There they are! Pictures of the old gang: Kenny Kenny, Sebastian Jr., Screaming Rachel, Page, Angel Jack, Codie Ravioli, R Couri Hay, Michael, and MEEEEE.
And while I don’t think I’ve ever seen them before, I remember posing for my portrait like it was yesterday. I was really strung out at the time and positively skeletal, which in retrospect made for a lovely picture. The outfit was green, though, I wonder why he painted it red and purple? I guess to better match my hair? Oh well. The pictures are for sale “directly by The Only Authorized Representatives of The Estate of Artist Clayton LeFevre” which is incredibly sad, as I did not realize that Clayton had passed. Dear, sweet Clayton.
The listing states: “We would have liked to sell them as a set, however, we will consider selling them individually.” No word on the price, but prospective customers should inquire here.
Via Craigslist:
Clayton was a renowned artist, last based out of Brooklyn, NY and was most know for his Pop Art Style. Clayton was commissioned as one of an exclusive group of artists, by Michel Roux and Carillon Importers, to paint Original Art for their Absolut Vodka Campaign. Clayton created a series, which included Absolut Citron and Absolut Peppar paintings, as well as, Grand Marnier and La Grande Passion. Original, Numbered, Hand Signed Lithographs of all four series, are available from the Estate.
In addition, Clayton created a series of paintings for The Cougar Fund, where he worked on a fund raiser along with the famous Animal Conservationist, Jane Goodall. His paintings were made into Limited Edition Lithographs, to raise money for animal preservation. Further, Clayton was renowned for many projects, the most known, was his famous “100 Club”, where he painted two portraits of a celebrity, gave one to the celebrity and had them autograph the other for his own personal collection. Most of this collection was recently sold by the famous Julian’s Auction House in Beverly Hills, CA.
Finally, Clayton painted many socially controversial series, including a 10 painting series of the infamous Club Kids of NYC fame of the late 1980s and early 1990s, led by Michael Alig and James St. James. He also created a series called The American Dream Series, making a social commentary on the diversity between the “Haves” and “Have Nots”. His final series focused on the “Average New York Worker”, called the NY 12, featuring a Sanitation Worker, a Parks Worker, a Taxi Driver and a Social Worker. Unfortunately, Clayton’s sudden, untimely passing, left the series unfinished, along with so much potential.
