These press junkets can be MURDER. Do you know how they work? The film company’s PR dept books a hotel with conference rooms (The Four Seasons in Beverly Hills is used a LOT) and they set up as many as 20-30 or more mimi-interviews for the film’s star. They get maybe 10 minutes tops. It’s exhausting but it’s part of the biz and most of the time, the stars know the interviewers. Well, Cate Blanchett lost her cool the other day in a VERY awkward interview for something called The Project. She was there to talk about her new Disney film Cinderella, but got weird topics like drinking beer and why the children’s movie wasn’t R-rated. Interviewer Jonathan Hyla suggested he should have brought a few beers for them to drink during their chat. Blanchett came back, feigning outrage:
“I do not drink beers.”
Jonathan then asks…
“What should I have brought with me that would have helped break the ice here?”
To which Cate suggested ‘potato vodka’ made in Devon. Cate attempted to steer the interview back on course while making a not-so-subtle dig:
“Getting back to the movie at hand – one of us has got to do our job – the chemistry between them (Cinderella stars Lily James and Richard Madden) is amazing…” She went on…
A few more fumbling attempts and Hyla asked, referring to the Russian Blue Blanchett’s wicked stepmother character keeps in the film.
“Okay, serious question, how were you able to get that cat to do what you wanted it to do on a leash? I tried to put my girlfriend’s cat on a leash and it just never works for me!”
Turning around to look for her publicist, a confused and annoyed Blanchett fired back:
“That’s your question? That’s your f*cking question?”
OK. Then the interview is abruptly over. Jonathan was still over the moon about the exchange and Tweeted this below. I kind of have to agree. These things are SO boring they’re much better when they go off the tracks. Watch.
