Oh, Marilyn was MY ABSOLUTE IDOL. We’ve talked about this before. There was a time in the ’80s where I wanted to BE HIM. I would follow him and Boy George around Area and Palladium like a puppy dog. They were disdainful of me, of course (the word “naff” was used on more than one occasion) but MERCY MAUDE, I loved me some Marilyn. He was just the absolute epitome of ’80s glamour. He never hit here in America, but had a string of top tens in the UK, Japan, and Australia (my favorite? “Calling Your Name” which I still listen to at the gym – it’s my go-to cardio jam). He fell on hard times after getting addicted to heroin and perscription pills, which led to his becoming a bloated, toothless recluse – living with his mum – for nearly 20 years. During that time he pined for his lost love, Gavin Rossdale. Yes, THE Gavin Rossdale.
From The Mirror:
Rossdale, now long-married to No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani, at first denied the relationship when Boy George revealed it in his 1995 autobiography.
He later admitted only a “one-time experimentation”. Peter (Robinson, Marilyn’s real name)however, remembers it as much more.
“He was a fan of mine,” he recalls. “He’d follow me around the clubs everywhere and I was vile to him so he would stop. But he never did.
“One day I saw him in a club and told him it had to stop. He had his car outside and asked to speak to me somewhere quiet.
“He told me he loved me, which I said was ridiculous because he didn’t know me. But after about an hour-and-a-half we were both crying and ended up in each other’s arms. And that was it. We were a couple.”
Gavin continues to insist it was just a one-off, but Peter says the rock star was the love of his life and when they split in 1986 he was devastated.
“I cried every day for 10 years,” he says. “I’ve not even kissed anyone else since.”
That was in the ’80s. A loooooooong time ago. And he hasn’t been with anyone since? That make me want to cry. Poor little guy. Just seeing his face again makes me happy, though. And hearing he’s on the mend is marvelous news.
Now determined to turn his life around, Peter, 52, says he has been clean of drugs for four years and is busy picking up the pieces.
“I realised I had nowhere else to go,” he says. “It was either death, or trying to come out of this horrible place.”
So in 2010 he went on a three-month rehab programme at Focus 12, a centre near his home which has Russell Brand, Davina McCall and Boy George as its patrons.
He says: “I’ve been clean for four years now but I’ve had to build everything back up from scratch. I left with a carrier bag and nothing else to my name. I’m not proud to be on benefits and I’m doing everything in my power to make something of myself.”
He put himself through a drama course to learn how to “communicate with people again”. He also has someone in his life he hopes might become his partner, saying he is “happiest when I’m in love, and being loved”.
He is working on his autobiography and says he has major music projects in the pipeline which he hopes will set him back on his feet.
Here’s hoping he has the biggest comeback since Tina Turner!
